Hi all
While I was browsing through eBay the other day, I found this early 2000s sewing pattern to add to my collection.
It's Simplicity Accessories 5308 from 2003.
I'd recently purchased a box of fabric from an estate sale and thought, "OO, that corduroy fabric will work well for that hat!" So, it had to come home. I couldn't leave it sitting there on eBay, all alone.
Now, I am the first to admit I'm not usually a hat person. There is something about this one though. I'm not sure if it's because it reminds me of a misspent childhood watching The Goodies clobber people with enormous Black Puddings. Or if it's just a throwback to those easier, younger days of youth.
Anyway, it was one of those patterns I just had to get started on as soon as it arrived.
As you can see from this picture, I am a closet pattern tracer. I trace all my patterns. It's a habit I have had since I first started sewing. It helps keep the original pattern in pristine condition so I can make different sizes. And if it ever goes out of print, I'll still have it readily available.
I used corduroy fabric, or cord for short, for this project as I needed something with a bit of stiffness to it. Cord is an easy fabric to work with as long as you remember it has a nap.
No, not an afternoon snooze. Although with all this hot weather lately, I could do with a bit of a nap in the afternoons!
A nap is the direction that the pile or surface of the fabric runs in. When cutting you need to make sure that all your pieces are cut with the nap going the same way. Otherwise, there will be a distinct color difference between each piece.
Simplicity 5308 stitches together easily and quickly. It's not a complicated pattern so it's suitable for beginners and advanced... Sewists. Seamstresses? Sewers? I think I'll stick with Stitchers.
On the whole, I like the way it turned out. Next time I'll shorten the top pieces a little. The flop to the top is a bit on the large side.
Just need a fry up with a bit of black pudding now.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with black pudding - check out this link.
If you want to know more about The Goodies, I recommend checking out some of their videos on YouTube. Be warned though, The Goodies are a bit of an acquired taste.
Come to think of it, so is black pudding.
Bye for now
Olly
